One of Rainbow Nannies core values is “celebrating diversity in people, families, cultures and beliefs” — and supporting LGTBQ+ families is included in this core value. For this reason we have decided to require a Safe Zone Training to work as a Newborn Care Specialist or Nanny with LGTBQ+ families.
While many Newborn Care Specialists and Nannies are inclusive, they oftentimes feel uncomfortable with the language. Just like our understanding of newborn care and in-home child care evolves, what we know about gender, sexuality, and the diversity of families, continues to evolve as well.
For example, terms and words such as chestfeeding, lactating person, pregnant person or birthing person are now being used more commonly. Using inclusive and affirming language ensures that all parents feel supported, especially during the first few weeks and months after birth; and while raising their children.
We have to be aware that our language has power; and that being inclusive will contribute to a space where all parents know that they are safe and valued. At Rainbow Nannies we want to assure inclusion across gender identities, gender expressions and families. We want to prevent that LGTBQ+ parents feel isolated, invalidated, or alienated.
This 2-hour, free to the public training, is a great opportunity to increase awareness and make your services and support to LGBTQ+ families more safe. You will learn which language is appropriate to use; and utilize your gained knowledge and skill to foster a warm atmosphere.
At the end of this training, participants receive a Safe Zone Certificate.
